I learn nearly as much from my clients’ journeys as I do from my own.

Often I work with clients for whom anxiety is a big problem. It’s a problem in that it gets in the way of them living the sorts of lives they want to live. Their lives shrink, as they do less and less in an attempt to minimise the uncomfortable feelings they feel.

I’ve been reflecting on my own journey with anxiety. I used to spend inordinate amounts of time trying to ‘keep safe’. This included healthy diets, avoidant behaviour, scanning for potential threats etc etc. If you’ve experienced anything beyond the normal anxiety that accompanies being alive, you’ll know what I mean.

Then there was a moment when I was recovering from ME, when it suddenly dawned on me. I probably did live one of the healthiest, risk-averse lives of those around me. BUT I wasn’t living life! And I thought, ‘What is the point of being alive for many years if I never live those years?

So I made a strong decision to say YES to life! There were so many things I wanted to do, and I chose to focus on these things rather than the potential dangers that I had been focusing on. Many of these things I’ve already done…

Am I choosing life? Or am I choosing fear? Good questions to ask oneself from time to time, to help re-orietate ourselves on our journey towards wholeness.
